FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?
According to the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario "Massage therapy consists primarily of hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health. Massage therapy treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body and optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Physical function can be developed, maintained and improved; and physical dysfunction and pain and the effects of stress can be relieved or prevented through the use of Massage Therapy. Modern massage techniques can be traced back to the 1700s and the development of Swedish massage, the first systematic method of therapeutic massage based on physiology. Today’s Massage Therapists use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology to combine traditional Swedish and modern Massage Therapy techniques with exercise and other therapies to treat their clients."
More information about Massage Therapy, it's scope of practice and standards can all be found at the CMTO website.
WHAT IS YOGA?
The history of yoga dates back to over 5000 years ago. It's said to have originated in India. There are 8 limbs of yoga and they are viewed as the ethical codes for Yoga. While practicing with me we will focus mostly on Asana and Pranayama (Posture and Breath). Through time and influence of western culture Yoga has developed a reputation as a physical exercise. With a safe and regular practice Yoga is believed to help improve your physical and mental health.
WHAT WILL MY FIRST APPOINTMENT BE LIKE?
Your first appointment will begin with a general health history intake and a physical assessment. With the information gathered from the intake I will develop a personal treatment plan for you. Everyone's treatment plan will be unique to them and will vary depending on whether they are practicing yoga or receiving massage therapy.
WHERE WILL THE APPOINTMENTS TAKE PLACE?
At this very moment I operate out of Toronto. I do not have a public studio but am happy to meet with you almost anywhere. If we're practicing Yoga as long as we have space for a mat we can make it work. For example the park, the beach, living room, backyard (etc). If you're looking for a massage treatment it's recommended to have the appointment at your own home or my home studio located close to Woodbine Subway Station.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING? HOW DO I PREPARE?
The most important thing to bring with you is an open mind. If you are practicing yoga I recommend a yoga mat and towel. You may also want to include a strap and yoga block.
If you are receiving a massage it's recommended to have a warm shower or bath before your treatment. During the massage you may undress to your own comfort level. The CMTO has regulations on how to properly drape a person during a massage treatment. Only the area being treated will be exposed and all other areas of the body will be covered. If there are any indications to treat a sensitive area additional consent will be required.
You will also need to complete a health history form before treatment. The health history form can be found here.
